My husband Graeme, a long time reader of Private Eye, has referred me to two items in this weeks edition (pictured).
The first is a marvellous new cartoon strip on page 19 called ‘Landlords a leaping’.
Its about a trip to the Landlord & Letting Show and speaking as one who has been to many of them, its spot on.
From the small kitchen units stand to the bad tenant tips. Its worth a look.
The ‘bad tenant tips’ on the board are also actually rather good advice.
On a more serious note, there are some telling figures in the first item in the Housing News section on page 12.
It reminds us that David Cameron and Grant Shapps (remember him?) had promised us a ‘one for one’ replacement of council homes under their new right to buy, with new affordable homes.
Hmm
It seems that in fact since the right to buy discounts were increased in April 2012, figures show that work has started on 2,300 new homes to replace 26,000 sold off.
So not one for one, but one for eleven.
When you bear in mind that a substantial proportion of ‘right to buy’ properties end up eventually in the hands of private landlords, that does not seem to me to be a responsible way to deal with property built with tax payers money for the under privileged.
What do you think?
